From Alumni to Teacher: My Time at Lakehill Preparatory School

When I first went off to college in the fall of 2000, everyone I met asked me where I graduated from high school. The conversation ALWAYS went something like this. When I revealed that I graduated from a very small K- 12 private school called Lakehill Preparatory School in the heart of Dallas many were shocked! It seemed unlikely that a smaller private school (especially one with a graduating class of 18 — at the time) would be able to provide the type of education needed for someone to be accepted into one of Texas’s top 10 universities.

dsc_0151What they didn’t know, was that I received a well-rounded and diverse education through Lakehill Prep. I experienced everything that the public school down the street offered, just on a smaller scale; from soccer, theater, music, and cheerleading to a variety of student clubs and organizations. (Yes, we even had Homecoming and pep rallies!) We also enjoyed small group experiences many larger schools would have trouble organizing like annual ski trips with the principal.

After graduating with a degree in education, Lakehill Prep was one of my first interviews upon moving back to Dallas.  I was absolutely thrilled to be hired as a kindergarten teacher at my alma mater and it felt like coming home.

While the buildings were beginning to change and the class sizes were slowly going up, the heart and the mission of the school is very much the same – to motivate students to learn with curiosity, lead with confidence, and serve with compassion.  It’s still a smaller private school in the wonderful Lakewood neighborhood tucked quietly in the middle of a sprawling city where teachers and faculty challenge and inspire students to become problem-solvers and live life with integrity.

It’s warm. It’s inviting. It’s not stuffy or intimidating.  The students, the families, the staff are all like family. I mean, how could they not be? It may be just the school where your child will thrive like I did!

Get To Know Lakehill Preparatory School

dsc_0049As I mentioned, Lakehill Preparatory School is growing and expanding (even more since I left after becoming a mom). In order to continue the Lakehill standard of quality private education, construction is underway to renovate 8,000 square feet of existing space and add an additional 16,000 square feet of new space to the original building on the Main Campus.

This vital effort will produce new lab spaces for science, writing, and computer science, as well as an art studio. It will also provide new classrooms, administrative offices, and meeting and event rooms. A dramatic 5,000 square foot inner courtyard will provide outdoor classroom and performance space. The new facility will be ready for the start of school in Fall 2017. It’s the perfect time to get come in and explore Lakehill Prep as an option for your children.

Lakehill Prep would love for you to gain a better understanding of what the school has to offer and invite you to learn more and experience the campus yourself!

  1. I’m an alum too, 1995. I loved my time at Lakehill and the education I received; I did and learned so much. It more than prepared me for my time at Rice University and UT Austin. I’m hoping my son graduates from Lakehill just like I did.
