Seeing pumpkin spice lattes on the Starbucks menu can only mean one thing… Fall is here. With no scorching heat, no tornado-like thunderstorms and evenings with just a touch of chill in the air, it’s the perfect season for outdoor fun in DFW. So, before you pull out your jeans and cozy sweaters, be sure to enjoy the wonderful weather while it lasts. Whether you’ll be going on a mission to find the perfect patch for pumpkins, scarecrows and farm fun, or if it’s hitting up the local hiking trails, just get out there and enjoy the exciting events we’ve found for the entire family!

Oct 2015 Dallas Moms Guide

October 1 :: Celebrate Hispanic Heritage month with a family cultural evening with games, face painting, piñatas, health screening, voter registration, music, and more at the Denton County Courthouse Square. 

October 1 :: What is it about train and kids? Your little engineers will love a fun, train-themed story time from the Carollton Depot Foundation. Head for the public library and get a spot in the middle of all the action.

October 3 :: Toddlers are busy little bees. Get a refresher course on keeping them safe (and happy!) at this free event. Snacks and beverages provided.

October 3 :: The Continental Avenue Bridge Presents, Critterman!! Come let the littles take a peek at snakes, spiders and other wild animals. Fun for the whole family.

October 3 :: Sometimes, as a parent, you feel like you are hanging on by a thread. Well, try hanging on by a rope, instead! Come out to The Heard Nature Museum for Ropes Course Adventure Day. Try three different courses, and don’t miss the chance to soar down 500 ft long zip line. Ages 8+; reservation is required.

October 3 :: We can’t think of any better way to spend a beautiful Saturday in October than heading to downtown Rockwall for a family 5k, followed by racks of ribs, wine tasting and kid-friendly entertainment. Join in on the fun at the 7th Annual Rib and Run.

October 3, 4 :: Mark the calendar for the Owl Prowl Family Camp at Dogwood Canyon. Families can enjoy classic camping activities like a campfire, s’mores, and the great outdoors all while learning about the owls in our area. It’ll be a hoot!

October 3, 10, 17 :: The good news is, with the change in the weather, you won’t be sweating in your shorts during the Sunset Music Series in Grapevine. Grab your chair and your kids and head for the Grapevine Botanical Garden for a free outdoor music concert.

October 3, 4, 10, 11, 18, 24, 25 :: It’ll be a stupendous time! Join Fancy Nancy, the beloved children’s book character, for her first musical production at Dallas Children’s Theater.

October 4 :: It’s always a good idea to visit the Texas Discovery Gardens. Join entomologist John Watts for the daily butterfly release.

October 7, 8, 10 :: Introduce your preschooler to the wonderful world of creativity at the Dallas Museum of Art. In October, join Arturo the Owl and let your wee ones put their five senses to work to experience art with more than just their eyes. For ages 3-5.

October 8 :: Atmos Energy presents bilingual story time fun for children ages 6 and under featuring music, movement, sing a song and crafts. Held at Bookmarks in Northpark Center.

October 9 :: It’s Lone Star History Day! Go on a learning journey with Dallas Heritage Village. From different schools to dirt floors and prairies to wood and brick buildings of higher learning, visitors will be able to see how education has changed over time.

October 10 :: Birding in Texas is a must, especially in the fall. Learn more about at Second Saturday Bird Walks at The Heard Museum. These walks are intended to help beginning and intermediate birders with bird spotting and identification techniques.

October 10, 11 :: Fall Fly Days are here. Head to the Cavanaugh Flight Museum for car shows, and a chance to watch aircraft take to the skies over Addison. Take a Warbird Ride, and witness true firepower with the Sherman Tank. A fun family event.

October 12 :: Celebrate the chills and thrills of Halloween at Sci-Tech’s Spooky Science Workshop, where creepy chemistry and mysterious science combine to provide a hauntingly good time. There will be hair-raising activities, creepy crafts, and fantastic demonstrations. Guests can look forward to making gooey, glowing monster slime, watch oozing pumpkins, create bubbling brews, and more eyeball fizzing FUN! Perfect for 1st – 3rd grade kiddos.

October 15 :: Kids are such lucky ducks! They have all the fun and there’s more in store at the Lucky Duck Kids Club at Watters Creek in Allen. Join in on the family-friendly activity series designed for children ages two to six years old. The events include educational hands-on activities and will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the green. Families can register for Lucky Duck Kids Club at any of the free events.

October 16, 17 :: There’s nothing like a good ol’ storytelling session and for two whole days, the Lone Star Storytelling Festival will be filled with concerts featuring nationally renowned professional tellers and the local Lone Star Student Storytellers.

October 16, 17, 18 :: You aren’t in Kansas, anymore. Nope, instead, you can be at Geppetto’s Theater for a puppet show. Join Dorothy, Toto and her crew as they make their way to Oz. This is a pajama party so don’t forget to get cozy! Best for ages 3 and up.

October 17 :: An annual North Texas tradition, the 18th Annual Butterfly Flutterby celebrates those beautiful winged creatures and their migration patterns. This free events starts with a Costume Parade, and continues with family fun at the Grapevine Botanical Garden. Kids can participate in butterfly crafts, butterfly exhibits, the Migration Station, interactive games, a scavenger hunt, face painting and other activities. 

October 17 :: Veg out at Reverchon Park during the Sixth Annual Texas Veggie Fair. Filled with sustainable, green vendors, food and activities, this health-conscious event welcomes all.

October 18 :: Touch-A-Truck, DFW is a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with community vehicles, trucks, machinery, basically anything with wheels! The whole family will have the chance to meet the men and women who protect, serve, and build the DFW community. Look for a Kid zone, raffle prizes, community booths, and food trucks, too.

October 18 :: Haven’t hung out with Big Tex, yet? Well, better hurry to Fair Park because today’s the last day to enjoy the State Fair of Texas.

October 24 :: Head to the Trinity River Corridor for a day of kites, outdoor fun and adventure at the Trinity River Wind Festival.

October 24 :: Join in on a nature filled weekend at Harvest Days, designed to help your family discover the joys of camping and Texas State Parks. All camping gear and equipment required for an overnight stay at the park is included with each reservation!

October 24, 25 :: Nestled in the trees of Huffhines Park, Huffhines Art Trails has become a tradition for many. A live entertainment stage with local talent adds to the already festive environment, throw in an adventurous scavenger hunt for the kids, a one of a kind café and food vendors with delicious treats and you have an incredible weekend of ART, MUSIC & FUN!! See you on the trails!

October 24 :: It’s all things baby and kid at the annual Dallas Baby & Kid Expo. Meet your favorite retailers, get parenting tips and tricks, and enjoy family-friendly activities like face painting, balloons and fashion shows.

October 29 :: Let the spooky happenings begin! The Downtown Wylie Merchants Association presents Boo on Ballard. It’s a safe alternative to trick-or-treating.

October 30 :: McKinney’s annual Scare on the Square has grown to hundreds of trick-or-treaters enjoying hayrides, treats and a safe, secure, family-fun Halloween event. Bring your little goblins and join us for shop-to-shop tricks and treats. 

October 31 :: Start Halloween off with a Monster Dash! Run with the whole family and don’t forget to enter the costume contest.

October 31 :: Head to the Richardson Public Library for a Spookalicious Halloween Happening. Enjoy spook-tacular stories, “boo”-tiful crafts, and trick-or-treating with puppets!  Don’t forget to have the littles wear their Halloween finest.
