Summer is quickly approaching and the weather is getting warmer. Here’s your chance to take advantage of some great family activities before our first 100 degree day. From Renaissance fair to art festivals and storytimes in the park, there’s something for everyone almost any day of the week. 

The Guide below is just a glimpse at some of the more interesting events happening around the city to help you plan your month of May 2016. We maintain a full calendar of events here and when you subscribe to our Newsletter, you get a free calendar printable! One Day Only 

May 1 :: Dallas Children’s Theater has brought back Balloonacy – a play perfect for ages 2+. This 1 hour performance is one you won’t want to miss! 

May 4 :: May the 4th Be With You! Join in the Star Wars fun with an Intergalactic Star Wars Day Craft at Dallas West Branch Library! It’s a FREE at 10:30am. 

May 5 :: There’s not a better place to enjoy Spring than at Texas Discovery Gardens for Stories and More! Read a book, enjoy themed snacks and activities, and stay for the noon butterfly release in the Butterfly House. Begins at 11am; tickets are $8/child and regular admission for adults. 

May 7 :: Yes! Your child does belong in an art museum…and this post proves it! Give it a try and bring them to the Nasher Sculpture Garden for FREE with Target First Saturdays for family programming from 10am-2pm and free admission all day!

May 7 :: Celebrate Plano’s 13th Annual Asian-American Heritage Festival “AsiaFest 2016” at Haggard Park. Children can explore various cultures through language, music, fashion, martial arts, and FREE activities

May 7 :: Ever wanted to spend the night at the Dallas Zoo? You can with their Family Overnight Campout! The minimum age to participate is 5, but includes after hours tours, behind-the-scenes demonstrations, Zoo admission, breakfast, and snacks. 

May 11 :: Dallas Heritage Village at Old City Park presents their monthly storytime for preschoolers Barnyard Buddies. This month’s theme: May Flowers

May 13 :: Enjoy the outdoors with a Movie in the Park at Forney Community Park! Movies vary, but this Friday it’s Minions! 

May 14 :: Bring your teddy bear, a picnic lunch and enjoy the festivities at Perry Homestead Museum in Carrollton, which include: crafts for your bear, games, cookies and lemonade; and a teddy bear first aid station where a certified teddy bear nurse will repair your well-loved bear.

May 19 :: Get out and explore Nature at the Trinity River Audubon Center. The Third Thursday of every month includes FREE admission. 

May 19 :: It’s time for the Lucky Duck Kids Club at Watters Creek in Allen! This Month’s Theme: Flower Power. This FREE event is for children of all ages!

Weekend Long Events

May 7-8, 14-15, 21-22, 28-29 :: Each Saturday and Sunday from 1-5 p.m head to the Dallas Zoo for Dallas Roars! Enjoy a DJ playing music and leading games; bounce houses; conservation stations; and special activities in the Lacerte Family Children’s Zoo.

May 7-8 :: The Cottonwood Art Festival in Richardson is an easy way to break outdoors with the kids! It’s a FREE event with musicians, vendors, and children’s activities.  

May 13-15 :: If you enjoy food, then don’t miss Taste Addison! With over 180+ restaurants all in one location, the whole family will enjoy tasty samples, desserts, and beverages in Addison Circle all weekend long. 

May 13-15 :: Allen Arts Festival at Watters Creek includes children’s art activities, music and choral performances, hip hop flash mob, artist demonstrations, storytime, art talks, and band performances on the Village Green. Food trucks will be on-site with popular food items, and Watters Creek has  restaurants that offer many choices and a sit-down eating options.

May 20-22 :: One of the largest concert events each year takes place in Richardson at the Wildflower Arts & Music Festival. Enjoy artists like Peter Frampton, Survivor, The Guess Who, and more! Families will love the food vendors and trucks and Kidz Korner where kids of all ages will find all kinds of games, activities and entertainment geared just for them.

 

Happening All Month

Just south of the Dallas metroplex, the Scarborough Renaissance Festival kicks off in April and runs through May 30th. Curious what there is for kids? Check out our post

If you or your children love to collect, this is the exhibit for you! Eye of the Collector at Perot Museum of Nature and Science holds Dallas Cowboy memorabilia, PEZ dispensers of all kinds, the largest Star Wars collection in the world, and so much more!
