Dallas Moms Need to Know: A Guide to the Month of December

Happy December, everyone! Welcome to the coziest, sparkliest, busiest month of the year. We have holiday-themed activities in this roundup, to be sure, but don’t forget to check out our Dallas Holiday Guide for details on even more showstopping special events, activities, Santa sightings, etc. There is SO much going on in Dallas in December. Have a coffee or three and let’s do this!

December 2 :: Decorate gingerbread cookies at Northpark’s Camp Gingerbread today (Level 1, near Macy’s), with proceeds benefiting Shared Housing, a non-profit that facilitates affordable housing options for those in need. Saturday: 10am-5pm, Sunday: 11am-4pm. $10 per child.

December 2 :: Christmas Create at SPARK! provides materials to make night lights for children in transitional housing. Kids can also play on the 6,000-ft. Climb, Crawl, Slide Sculpture and participate in lots of pop-up activities. Designed for ages 2nd grade to high school. 10am-4pm. $8 in advance/$10 at the door.

December 2 :: Family Experiments at Klyde Warren Park are all about space this month. Explore the mysteries of the universe with a fun, hands-on activity led by educators from the Perot Museum. 11am-2pm. Free!

December 2, 9, 16, 23 :: Slappy’s Holiday Circus show at the Galleria is a classic European-style circus with puppets, magic, clowns, contortionists, aerialists and jugglers. Showtimes at 1pm and 3pm on Level 1 by Nordstrom. Also at the Galleria, the usual Showtime Saturday artists perform from 11:30am-12pm every Saturday. Both are free!

December 6 :: Studio Movie Grill’s Classic Series shows Christmas movies on Wednesdays this month for $5 per ticket. The Royal Lane location will show Elf today, with A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation the following weeks. Check the link for location and showtime details. 7:15pm.

December 10 :: Irving Arts Center hosts it’s regular Second Sunday Funday with a December theme of “Holidays Around the World, Festival of Lights.”  While you are there, cast a vote for your favorite tree in the 25th annual Tree Decorating Competition. 1-4pm. Free!

December 3, 10, 17 :: The American Girl Store at the Galleria hosts a Holiday Tea for kids 8 and up (and their dolls). Make a fleece headband for your doll, create holiday cards, and enjoy a special menu of treats. Reservations required. 3:30-4:30pm. $21.95 per person.

December 9 :: Join Dallas Moms Blog for Breakfast with Santa! Choose from 2 sessions: 9am OR 11am, and enjoy breakfast, crafts, activities, Santa storytime and photos, and admission into the Texas Discovery Garden’s Butterfly House. Tickets are limited, so register now!

December 9 :: Perot Museum Discovery Days skipped November, but they’re back this month with a “Space” theme. Try robotic arm challenges, make stomp rockets and pocket solar systems, see planetarium shows, and much more. The link has a listing of all the activities and demonstrations for the day. Included with price of admission.

December 9 :: Come to Fretz Park Library and learn to fold an origami creation with Ms. Mei-Wan (side note: origami paper would make a fun stocking stuffer!). Open to children and adults. 2-3pm. Free!

December 12-20:: Watch the lighting of the 15-foot menorah at the Galleria on each night of Hanukkah. The menorah is on Level 1, near the Guest Reception Center. Candles lit at sunset each evening.

December 13 :: Literacy Launch for Babies at the Richardson Library is a multi-sensory experience promoting brain development, oral language and fine and gross motor skills. Open to residents and non-residents, no registration required. 11:45am. Free!

December 14 :: Join Play Street Plano for a Hanukkah Celebration with stories, games, crafts and traditional Hanukkah treats like brisket, carrots and latkes from Eatzi’s and jelly donuts. Book online, $11 per person. Reserve a spot for each family member over age 1, including parents & grandparents. Kids under 1 don’t need a reservation.

December 16 :: I totally love this idea – Bookmarks at Northpark does a shoelace-tying storytime in the kid’s shoe department at Nordstrom (3rd floor) every month. Kids can take home a free lacing card for extra practice. 9am. Free!

December 16 :: Kick off winter break with a party at Forest Green Branch Library complete with refreshments and exciting experiments from the folks in the Perot Tech Truck. Free!

December 18 :: Pizza party at Alamo Drafthouse Richardson while you watch Home Alone (aka the first movie to make me cry as a kid). All-you-can-eat cheese pizza included in your ticket price. 4:10pm. (ok, since you asked, I cried when the mom finally came back home and they hug!)

December 21 :: If you aren’t down with the mall Santa crowds, might I suggest a cozy library storytime with Santa? The Audelia Road Branch hosts Santa today for a story, crafts, and a chance to take a photo with the big guy. 11am-12pm. Free!

December 26-30 :: One more for the Perot, this week they’ve got extended hours and special programs for winter break: Science on the Spot demos, drop-in activities, crafts, trivia, and more. Check the link for daily schedule breakdowns. 10am-7pm (member entry at 9am).

December 29 :: Fans of all ages can dress up to attend the Harry Potter Yule Ball at the Carrollton Library. In addition to music and dancing, there will be Harry Potter themed crafts, games, and a photobooth. 6:30-9:30pm. Free!
