Texans often joke about their “winter” experience every year-I can vividly remember spending more than one Christmas in just a long sleeve shirt watching my girls play with their new outside toys.  Sadly though, no matter how mild our winter is we still can’t escape cold season so now is the time I start taking extra actions to make sure my family stays healthy during the winter months. While all of the below five tips are important anytime of the year, it is especially so during cold season since germs are so rampant.

Soak Up Some Sun :: This is where our mellow winters come to our advantage-Vitamin D is best absorbed via sunlight and is a great immunity boosters.  Even as little as 30 minutes a day will make a difference!

Keep Moving :: While you are outdoors getting your sun on, keep that body moving!  I know I’m personally less motivated during the winter months to exercise (hey, I have adorable sweaters to hide the lumps and bumps that tank tops don’t hide) but exercise is another great immunity booster as well as helping us get better sleep which also helps us from getting sick.

Eat Well ::  This is probably the hardest thing for me during the winter months because there are just so many events and parties, all with great foods!  Making sure my family gets their needed nutrients from whole and natural foods is one of the best ways to increase their immunity-so yes we will chow down on some holiday treats but also make sure we are getting our fruits and veggies in too.

Drink Your Water :: I find that I’m naturally more conscious of dehydration during the summer months but that doesn’t mean it is any less important to stay hydrated during the winter months.  Your body’s immune system is compromised when dehydrated so it is incredibly important to keep that water intake up-even if you aren’t feeling as thirsty.

Clean Out Your Sinuses :: Yes, Neti Pots are weird.  My husband is convinced he is going to drown every time he uses it but he always feels so much better after cleaning out his sinuses.  I have found that my family has so many less sinus and cold issues when we are proactively using our Neti Pot instead of only using it when we become ill.

coldcough_valuegrape_front_facingAll of the above tips do help (immensely) to keep my family healthy, but we all know it isn’t fool proof.  Germs still find their way to our bodies no matter how well rested we are and how often we wash our hands.  If you do find one of your littles have come down with a cold this upcoming season-be sure to consider Hylands 4 Kids Cough ‘n’ Cold Day and Night Pack that can be found exclusively at Costco.  Kids like the grape flavor and parents love that this brand (that has been trusted for over a century) safely provides natural relief of common cold symptoms in children including coughing, sneezing, sore throat, runny nose and nasal and chest congestion and occasional sleeplessness.
