Get Hands-On at SeaWorld San Antonio’s Discovery Point

Dallas Moms Blog has partnered Visit San Antonio to bring you the latest information happening at SeaWorld San Antonio. All opinions are 100% our own!

My boys are in that prime stage where animals are a mystery, but amazing all at the same time. They’re well past the point of What sound does that animal make? and onto questions like Where do those animals live? How big are they in real life?

IMG_20150624_103232848We’ve been visiting the Zoo since they were very young. but more recently they’ve been watching certain Prideland adventures and seeing the magical healing powers of a stuffed pet doctor and their interest in how animals interact with one another has increased even more– What are these animal’s homes like? What does that animal eat? How long do they live? Who takes care of them when they’re sick?

As a mom, I have a love-hate relationship with these types of questions because for me, exploration and hands-on experiences are key to fostering those types of interests.  What a better way to learn the answers than to discover it for themselves? When possible we always encourage our kids to get up close and personal at local petting zoos, pick up those creepy crawlies we find on walks, and even learn to take care of the interesting creatures that “needed” rescuing. (You know like the fish, lizards, and turtles that wouldn’t have survived on their own. Can you pick up on my sarcasm?) But, we’re not exactly about to go up and pet a lion to feel how soft its mane is or go on a deep sea expedition to hear how a dolphin communicates.  And SeaWorld Parks gets that!

This past summer, SeaWorld San Antonio officially opened their brand new interactive dolphin habitat Discovery Point. It houses the only in-water dolphin swim in the state of Texas, is a welcome center, and contains a 750,000 gallon water aquarium called Explorer’s Reef.

Discovery Point is now home to 21 Atlantic Botttlenose dolphins who were either born at SeaWorld or rescued by the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network and deemed non-releasable by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Guests are invited to interact with the Bottlenose dolphins in their new 600,000 gallon Dolphin Lagoon (double the size of their previous habitat) while learning about their behavior and communication with SeaWorld’s newest signature swim programs for adults & children ages 6 years old and up.

“Discovery Point underscores our mission of experiences that matter. Our guests will see the wonder and majesty of dolphins and other marine animals, connecting with them in new ways to create a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting these amazing animals and their ocean habitat.” ~ Chris Bellows, SeaWorld San Antonio – Vice President of Zoological Operations

While my boys aren’t quiet old enough yet to experience this amazing hands-on opportunities with the dolphins, sea lions, and belugas, other encounters at Discovery Point’s will help fuel their curiosity. Discovery Point offers a variety of educational experiences for those who aren’t able to take a swim with the animals.

Dolphin Lagoon features the park’s first underwater viewing area where guests have the opportunity to watch dolphins swimming and playing in a new way, through a floor-to-ceiling, panoramic underwater view.

Then Discovery Point’s Explorer’s Reef contains over 750,000 gallons of water to house more than 5 different species of sharks, 350 species of fish, invertebrates, and amphibians, and a large Caribbean coral display (grown by SeaWorld San Antonio’s Aquarium Department).
