Indoor Fun: Bake And Play

1

IMG_5609Have you heard about the newest East Dallas family gem? Owners Dee Moore (of Dee’s Doggie Den) and Kelly Kemp just opened Bake And Play at the southeast corner of Mockingbird and Abrams.  It might just be THE answer to many of us moms’ summer doldrum dilemma and another spot to add to our list of favorite indoor play areas.

Teaming up with executive chef Jackie Blakely (formerly of Ritz Carlton) and executive pasty chef Gladys Ibanez (who has tickled our Dallas sweet tooth at Hotel Palomar, Sambuca, Breadwinners, and Smoke), Bake And Play’s concept aims to please families.

Part Monster Yogurt with its play area, part Start with its health-conscious food, part The Lot with its efforts to entertain little ones while parents dine, and part Little Gym with its birthday party mecca strategy, Bake and Play is hoping to find a niche in the East Dallas family market.

Need a place to dine out, but have a squirmy child? Bake and Play is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with food served Cafe Express-style where you order at the counter and then find a place to sit.  You can eat in peace while your kids play.

IMG_5659Offers range from gourmet muffins and kolaches (“the West, TX kind”, I’m told) at breakfast to salads, pot roasts, baked potatoes (“no french fries here!”), and signature pizzas during the day.  The menu aims toward the food-savvy crowd with locally-sourced produce, non-processed meats like “ham and turkey off the bone”, and seasonal menu changes.

Make sure to check out their cute snack plate in the afternoon where kids can eat from a cute muffin tin filled with goldfish, fruit, yogurt, veggies, and ranch dressing.

IMG_5612The best part? While you are enjoying your meal, the kids are free to roam the 1600 square foot playroom complete with an indoor jungle gym, dress-up costumes, a train table, and a dance floor complete with disco ball.

My son had a ball dressing up as a fireman while whipping up “waffles” for me from their play kitchen.

IMG_5656Important note: socks are required for children and adults. If you forget socks, there are some available for purchase.

Owner Kelly Kemp said the goal of Bake and Play is to be “an interactive family-friendly place to go for kids that are in that age where they can’t sit still.”

Are you looking for a new play date idea?  Children can run off some energy in the play space while parents utilize the free wi-fi.  And when kids tire of the toy area, why not tap the inner pastry chef of your child with cookie and cupcake decorating?

IMG_5615During the week, plain sugar cookies and cupcakes can be frosted and decorated for a snack. Offering dozens of toppings like sprinkles, nerds, red hots, mike and ikes, and crushed oreos, little hands can build their own sugary masterpieces.

On the weekends, Bake and Play’s decorating room turns into birthday party central.

By the way, Bake and Play did not compensate me for this post.  I am just an over-eager Lakewood resident who wants to share the news with you.
