If you’re anything like me, you adore decorating for Christmas, but hot glue guns and Mod Podge aren’t really your forte. It’s cool, friends. We lazy girls must stick together.
I’ve found that the easiest way to incorporate the holiday spirit into my home is to keep it simple with natural textures and as much live greenery as I can find. So, naturally, I sent my husband to the home improvement store a few weeks ago with one mission: buy me all the fresh garland. I didn’t really have a plan for it, but I figured I’d find a way to work it in. After wrapping 40 feet of it around my spiral staircase banister, I had one package left and thought that it might be great for displaying all of the beautiful holiday cards we receive every year.
Turns out, it works perfectly!
Here’s what you’ll need to create this look in your home:
- one or two 20-ft packages of live garland
- floral wire
- wire cutters
- nails
- hammer
- clothespins
- spray bottle
- ladder
Now, let’s get to it.
- First, find your prettiest doorway and enlist someone’s help. This stuff is heavy, and it can get a little dicey when you try and hang it up by yourself (not that I’d know that from personal experience. . .).
- Find the center point of both the garland and the doorway and line them up.
- Hammer a nail through the branch or the large floral wire that’s running through the garland.
- Outline the doorway with the garland, and continue hammering nails in the garland every 10-12 inches down both sides of the doorway.
- When you finish securing the garland with nails, look to see if you like how the greenery is hanging. If not, cut pieces of floral wire to secure individual branches to the main wire. I left mine hanging mostly as is. If you want a thicker, more lush look, you can double up and use two packages of greenery. If you use two packages, I’d hang them in opposite directions so you get branches that hang in both directions.
- Once you have the garland hung and arranged, use large clothespins to hang your Christmas cards however you like!
And that’s it! You can use a spray bottle to spray the branches and stems with water every day or so to keep your garland looking fresh as long as possible. And just remember that when live greenery gets dry, it can be a fire hazard, so steer clear with candles.
So now that you have your Christmas cards displayed and have basically conquered the world, go grab a cup of hot cocoa and snuggle up next to the fire. You’ve got this lazy girl’s seal of approval.
