2016 is almost here! Even if you don’t make it to the gym to run five miles every morning, this year, with our picks for best family events in and around Dallas, it’ll be easy to stick to your resolution to get out and explore more of what the metroplex has to offer. From new exhibits at the Perot Museum to campfires and night hikes, there’s something for everyone (and every type of weather!).

January Dallas Moms Guide

All Month :: The cold weather means it’s a perfect time to check out Creatures of Light, the new exhibit at Perot Museum of Science and Nature. Discover extraordinary organisms with the ability to glow by immersing yourself in the magical world of bioluminescence!

All Month :: Penguin Days are back at the Dallas Zoo! Admission is just $5 through February.

January 2 :: If the sun is shining, bundle up and head for the Reading Room at Klyde Warren Park for a fun activity with the Nasher Sculpture Center . Stay to play and nosh on tasty eats from the local food trucks.

January 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, 31 :: If the weather doesn’t agree with your plans to go to the park, the kids can still get a taste of the Great Outdoors when you head to Bass Pro Shop Garland every Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Big Mouth Bass Challenge, where kids will have the opportunity to toss a line a a Big Mouth Bass and a chance to win a prize. 11:00 am.

January 3 :: Today is your last chance to catch Dallas’s very own Lone Star Circus Zingari, a loving tribute to the old Gypsy roots of many circus families, replete with a cornucopia of talented acrobats, aerialists, equilibrists, jugglers, clowns and four-legged stars from all over the world, It’s an awe-inspiring, fun-filled spectacular guaranteed to charm, amuse and entertain everyone – from 5 to 105! January 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 :: Take advantage of the mild Texas winters and sign up for the Sunday Adventure Series at the Trinity River Audubon Center. From birding tips to lessons on how to create a nature journal, every Sunday is a different topic. Great for the whole family. All five classes are just $36.

January 6, 13, 20, 27 :: Every Wednesday is pajama day at Going Bonkers; have the kids wear their pj’s and receive ½ off the price of admission. The ginormous indoor playground is just the thing to keep the winter blues away.

January 7 :: Happy Birthday A. A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh Day!) Join other kids for stories about the beloved bear from the Hundred Acre Wood as part of the Irving Art Center’s JumpstART Stories & Art Series. Ages 2 and up.

January 7, 8, 9, 10 :: Kick start your resolution to get out and explore more by taking the kids to a show of Beauty and the Beast, presented by Frisco Youth Theater. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door and $20 for front row and available at friscoyouththeatre.org.

January 8 :: Give your kids a chance to get creative by dropping by Emily Fowler Library in Denton for LEGO Builder’s Club!   All bricks are provided by the library (please don’t bring your own). Ages 6 and older.

January 9 :: Learn about Jackson Pollack and enjoy a day with your mini Picasso, by signing up for Family Workshop: Action Art, one in a series of programs hosted by Dallas Museum of Art. Ages 6 to 12. $8 Public, $5 DMA Member, tickets are available now.  

January 9 :: It’s Family Discovery Day at the Perot Museum of Science and Nature! Try out real experiments, design and build new creations, and check out dynamic performances each month with guest scientists, educators and artists. Discovery Days are free for Museum members and included in the cost of general admission for non-members. Reserve your tickets early!

January 9  :: It’s true what they say about the early bird. Shake a tail feather with your early risers out to the Heard Museum for a morning of birding. Learn techniques for spotting and identifying different types of birds. 8:00 am – 9:00 am.

January 13 :: Head over to Audelia Branch of the Dallas Library for tot-approved stories and songs. It’s just enough of a jam session to wear out the little ones before naptime!

January 16, 17 :: Celebrate the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Granville Arts Center in Garland. The two-day festival kicks off  with a concert featuring The Garland Citywide MLK Youth Choir, at 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 16. and continues to January 17th, when Garland’s youth will display their talents in praise dance, poems and step presentations in the MLK Youth Extravaganza at 4 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

January 16, 17 :: All Aboard! Chug, chug your way over to the Plano Centre for the Dallas Area Train Show. Admission $8.00 per person Children 12 and under are FREE.

January 22 :: Ommm… it’s time for Yoga 4 Kids! Join other mini-gurus at the the NorthCourt inside NorthPark Center for a literary journey through yoga breathing, stretching, story and shavasana led by Stephanie Spett (Please bring a yoga mat.) 10:30 am.

January 23 :: Winter is prime nesting time for owls, and you might just hear them hooting it up in the forests of LLELA. Join naturalists for a campfire night hike 5:45pm – 7:45pm. Worried about your little bugs being chilly? The group will warm up by the fire before and after the hike. Ages 5 and up. Registration is required. Sign up here.

January 30 :: Discover the iron in breakfast cereal, identify magnetic objects, build a magnetic chain, and more at Get Stuck! Magnets and Magnetism, at the Dallas Library, Central Branch, 2nd floor Children’s Room. 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm.
