So, Your Child Has Lice…

0

School is fully in session and every parent knows to cringe when the school nurse calls home.  “I’m sorry, but your child has lice.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly 12 million people a year get head lice in the U.S. Several friends had this happen to them recently (I know, I know- it sounds suspicious that I am writing “for a friend”) and I quickly learned that I had no idea about the world of lice removal and what to do next.

If you get that dreaded call, did you know there are places that will handle the removal for you?your-kid-has-lice1. The Lice Place

If you get the call, pack up your entire family and plan to spend some quality time here.  This center is full-service for checking and ridding all members of the family from lice and nits and touts its ownership by a Registered Nurse.  Kids can watch DVDS and eat suckers while their hair is treated, scoured, and combed for lice removal.  Treatments fees are $99/hour, with an “average” time of 45 to 90 minutes for a girl or 15 to 30 minutes for a boy.  Additional family members can be checked for $12.50 and then determined if they need further treatment.  After leaving the center, all bedding, towels, and laundry needs to be immediately washed and pillows and stuffed animals need to be put in the drier for 30 minutes.  The Lice Place guarantees their services for thirty days and recommends a free follow-up after one week.  4222 Trinity Mills Rd, Suite 116; 972-380-1900

2. Hair Fairies

Equipped with free Wi-Fi and a kids play area and video games, Hair Fairies provides lice removal treatments and offers hair cuts afterwards.  If discretion (or convenience) is of the upmost importance, Hair Fairies also makes house calls! Treatments run $105/hr with additional travel fees for home services.  8132 Park Lane, Suite 160; 214-750-5423

Also, prevention is helpful in the world of lice.  There are products with ingredients that help repel lice from ever making a home in your child’s hair.

While I’ve not personally tried any of these, here’s what you’ll find on the market:

  • Fairy Tales Rosemary Repel Shampoo, Conditioner, or Spray (Available at Ulta or Amazon)
  • Lice Shield Leave-In Spray (Available on Amazon or at Walmart, Walgreens and other pharmacies)
  • Babo Botanicals Lice Repel Shampoo or Conditioning Spray (Available on Amazon, Central Market or buybuy Baby)

NOTE: None of the locations mentioned in this post incentivized me to write about their services.  I was just truly naive about lice removal and felt a need to pass it on to my Dallas neighbors! Save this post for your special rainy day…
