As parents, it’s our job to make sure our children have the best shot at being successful in life. One of the biggest pieces to this puzzle include the schooling and education we choose for them. We are lucky to live in a city in which there are tons of excellent options for our children’s education, but what if those options weren’t enough? What if, despite your best efforts in choosing where your child receives his or her education they’re struggling; whether they’re falling behind academically or have just surpassed their classmates?

Enter Explore Horizons. Explore Horizons specializes in tutoring enrichment in math, reading, and writing for children from pre-kindergarten to 8th grade, and they have 5 locations conveniently located all around the metroplex.
As a parent who will have a child in the school system come this August, I decided to go check things out for myself and scheduled an in-person assessment.

Let’s Get The Session Started!

Lizard Cards encourage positive performance and earn fun rewards!

When children arrive for the 75 minute session, they’re asked to sign in by telling time on the clock. From there they pick up the tools they’ll need for the day’s activities and can then join a tutor and the other children to go through what they’ll be doing that day. There are no more than 6 children per tutor, so each child gets a substantial amount of one-on-one time.

Explore Horizons’ curriculum is also aligned with TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills) objectives in math, reading, and writing, so everything the children work on during their sessions will be extremely beneficial to them in the classroom.

What Makes Explore Horizons Different

One thing I noticed that sets Explore Horizons apart from other tutoring centers are the different ways they’ve made a child’s experience at the center fun and exciting. Explore Horizon’s mascot is a lizard and the children are awarded a certain number of lizard cards depending on their performance each day. The children save their lizard cards and can trade them in to receive tons of prizes, all at different levels. I also thought this was a neat way to teach children how to be responsible and manage their money.

The children and parents are given feedback at the end of each session, and awards are given if the child focused on asking questions, concentrating, and putting forth effort {ACE} during each session. The children also compete for the coveted title of “Fearless Learner of The Month.”

I am so glad I visited the west Plano location of Explore Horizons. I will definitely keep them in my back pocket as an excellent option should either of my girls need a little extra help in school OR as a way to challenge them if they happen to be ahead of the pack. And as an added bonus, they’re also open all year round! This is a great option to keep your little one’s brain active over long summer and winter breaks.
