Childcare-Friendly Workouts in Dallas

7

Summer in Dallas is here, which means so is the heat! Our temps call for lots of pool time, shorts and a focus on health to keep blood pressure and organs feeling stable while the thermometers fluctuate and hit the triple digits. Surprisingly enough, I love a good workout in the summer. I feel more confident at the pool and on vacation and I feel getting my blood pressure up in the morning helps my body naturally regulate body temperature as the heat climbs in the afternoon.

Summer for moms is “busy season” of our work. The routines we may have built during the year are now in compromise with entertainment and supervision of kids home from school. The fitness routine can fall by the wayside, especially for those of us who are used to hitting the gym unaccompanied. Thankfully, there’s a good variety of spots to get in a sweat in Dallas that also offer childcare options, or are close enough to childcare to make a workout happen!

Here’s a few of the top picks I’ve tried or heard of from friends balancing health and family. As a reminder, be sure to check with your physician on working out in the higher temperatures of summer, especially if you’re taking things outside, or you are beginning, or getting back into your fitness routine!

Klyde Warren Park Stroller Boot Camp

This class at the park is completely free for moms and dads who have a stroller-ages baby (based on the workouts, ideally one below the age of wanting to run off). Boot camp style workout drills use the stroller or allow it to be nearby so you can interact with baby during your workout. It took me a while to get comfortable leaving my little one in childcare, and this is a great option for parents who want to stay strong and have special time with baby as well. Classes are taught for free by the Dallas YMCA on the great lawn and you can check here for times and schedules.

Diana, local mom and owner of We Yogis, makes fitness a family affair!

We Yogis

This locally-founded and owned yoga studio on Lovers Lane makes it easy for the whole family to Namaste. Childcare is available for little ones ages three months and up, and youth yoga classes are available for kids, pre-tweens and tweens ages 3-14. They even host birthday parties for kids! I am personally a big believer that moms need yoga (I even wrote a post about it!), and love their concept. Check out their Lakewood and Uptown studios opening soon.

Equinox

I love the classes at Equinox, which is great since my daughter loves the kid’s club here! I really like that I can get in an intense workout in less than an hour in a group fitness class, then have some time in the steam room and use their Kiehl’s products in the shower before it’s time to get the little one, who’s been making chalk drawings, playing iPad games or hanging with the very friendly babysitters. Good facilities make it easy to hit the road and stay out enjoying the day after a weekend morning workout.

Lifetime Premiere Club Mockingbird

Friends have really great things to say about the childcare here, which is conveniently included in monthly dues. The Latin dance cardio class has a cult following of some of the most vivacious people I know, with the best figures to match. Bonus points that Dancing with the Stars turned Shark Tank dad, Mark Cuban, is known to kill it in dance class and on the pick up basketball court here.

Kidville Camps

Though not attached to a gym, Kidville is in the heart of some of the best workouts in Dallas. Their camp schedule allows drop off classes for kiddos ages 18 months – 6 years old. Nearby is Studio 6 pilates and a new CorePower Yoga at Preston and Forest, or, even more convenient, Pure Barre Preston Hollow right next door in Kidville’s shopping center. You can find camp descriptions and registration information here

Make it a summer to remember with the kids without feeling like you’re behind on taking care of yourself when the back to school madness begins!

Lilly Neubauer
Lilly, Dallas born and bred, was fortunate to live outside of Texas at a young age to know there’s nothing quite like the world class cultural melting pot, big ideas and small town hospitality of her native city. From the biggest landmarks to the smallest taco stands, Lilly has enjoyed sharing her favorite parts of the city and her family’s journey navigating life in it at her blog, Pancakes and Beet Juice. A note to the joy that’s found in balance of life’s rich and healthy pleasures, Pancakes and Beet Juice and Lilly’s writing at Dallas Mom’s Blog cover topics ranging from food, fitness, family and enjoying new experiences in the city and beyond. Her love for Dallas and adventure is only made more fun by seeing old favorites again through the eyes of her daughter, Heidi, welcomed via open domestic adoption. The days are long but the years are short, and the whole mess is documented through various filters at her Instagram page.

  1. Most Jazzercise facilities have childcare. I work out at the Jazzercise Premier in Plano. It sits right off of 75 at Parker Rd. Come dance with us!

  2. I have to give a shout out to Melanie Fox with Baby Boot Camp at the Galleria. She helped me loose 35 pounds post baby! Not a childcare workout but it’s the Best mommy and me workout!

  3. You must check out a Town a North YMCA. Classes are awesome and challenging. The kids’ center is divided so babies are safe and secure. The oldest kids have an adventure zone that’s lots of fun too.
