Happy November! Am I going to get all emo on here about current events again? No, I’ll spare you this time, but let’s agree to stay positive and keep helping however we can; things are wild out there. One thing to be positive about is that we’ve finally got some perfect temperatures around here. Weather talk, my enduring fave! Take advantage of these beautiful days while we’ve got ’em. Here are some ideas to get you started.

November 17-January 7 at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie :: Magical Winter Lights is the biggest lantern festival in the U.S., a multicultural take on the traditional Chinese lantern festival, bursting with color, cultural performances, food, and fun.

Allow me to list the lantern exhibits, just to get you excited (click through for a peek): Magical Wonderland, The Lone Star State, Dinosaur Land, Mystery of the East, and Christmas Candy Land. And they’ve got carnival rides and games, too!

Magical Winter Lights is open almost every evening, including holidays. Please check their website for specifics, including an FAQ. $21/adults, $13/ages 4-12 & 65+, kids under 4 free!


All Month :: Dinosaurs Live! returns at the Heard. The museum closes at 5pm, meaning visitors arriving after 4 won’t get a chance to hit the dino trails, so plan accordingly. They are open Tuesday-Sunday, closed Monday. $11/adults, $8/ages 3-12, 2 & under free.

Through November 22 :: Autumn at the Arboretum winds down this month. Pumpkin Village, Mommy & Me Mondays, Tiny Tot Tuesdays, and special events like Dia de los Muertos on 11/1 and Veterans Weekend 11/11-12. Click here for admission and parking prices.

November 2 :: Stories & More at Texas Discovery Gardens offers stories, crafts, treats, and butterflies for toddlers (older siblings welcome!). 11am-12pm. If you are in the mood for something even more low-key, Toddler Talks is a new short program about butterflies and bugs offered daily at 11am. 

November 3, 10, 17 :: Toddler Storytime at Fretz Park Library happens every Friday at 11am (with a week off this month for the holiday). Designed for ages 18 months – 3 years old. Free!

November 4, 18 :: Head downtown for a Family Playdate at the Crow Collection of Asian Art the first and third Saturday of each month. Check the link for details, educator-led and self-guided activities offered throughout the afternoon. 11am-3pm. Free!

November 4 :: PJ Masks Live! at the Majestic Theater today. Catboy speed, Super Gecko muscles, you know the drill. 3pm. Tickets start at $19.50.

November 4 :: Celebrate Diwali (a festival of lights) at the 12th annual Grand Diwali Mela at the Cotton Bowl, with 140 food and merchandise vendors, laser show, pony rides, local and Bollywood entertainers, a Kids Corner, fireworks show, and more. 4pm-midnight. $8/adults ($10 at the gate), kids under 10 free!

November 4, 11, 18, 25 :: Showtime Saturday at the Galleria brings you circus clowns, magic shows, puppeteers, a different kid-friendly act each week. 11:30am-12pm. Free!

November 5 :: Tales for Tails. Grades K-4 can practice reading skills by reading to furry friends from Heart of Texas Therapy Dogs. 3-4pm. Tickets available starting at 2:30. Free!

November 5 :: Fall Festival and Truck Time at Shearith Israel. Rock climbing, bounce houses, mini horses (yesss), balloon artists, obstacles courses, music, food, and more. 11:30am – 3pm. $10/adults, $5/ages 3-12, 2 & under free.

November 7, 14, 21, 28 :: Periodic reminder about Toddler Tuesday at LEGOLAND Discovery Center and SEA LIFE Aquarium in Grapevine Mills. $15 gets you and two toddlers (under age 4) into either place.

November 8 :: Dallas Heritage Village just opened a new play place for their Barnyard Buddies program. In conjunction with the exhibit, Neighborhoods We Call Home, they’ll read children’s books about cultures and tolerance, followed by a hands-on activity and a fun craft. 11-11:45am. $5/ages 2 & up.

November 12 :: How about an afternoon at the theater? Pinkalicious: The Musical is at The Eisemann Center in Richardson today at 2:30pm. Tickets start at $13.

November 18 ::  The Trains at NorthPark celebrates their 30th anniversary this year, having raised over 13 million dollars for Ronald McDonald House of Dallas in that time. Incredible! Runs through December; $7/adults, $4/2-12, kids under 2 free.

November 18 :: Are you into the Olympics? Team USA Winterfest at Klyde Warren Park is a touring mini-festival complete with Team USA athletes, a chance for pics in a legit Olympic bobsled, free Hershey’s s’mores, and more. 11am-5pm. Free!

November 22-26 :: Nothing says Thanksgiving like Disney on Ice, no? Their Reach for the Stars show features characters from Frozen, Tangled, Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast, plus Mickey and his crew. Afternoon and evening showtimes available, tickets start at $32.

November 23 :: Support a charity and have some family fitness time before you eat. The North Texas Turkey Trot in Frisco has a 10k, 5k, or Miracle Mile for kids, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the Miracle League of Frisco, a sports organization for children ages 5-19 with special needs. Event starts at 8am in Frisco Square.

November 24 :: Christmas is a “go” the day after Thanksgiving, right? The Texas Ballet Theater clearly agrees and will perform The Nutcracker at the Winspear Opera House beginning today through December 3. This one’s more of a splurge, so definitely don’t go if there’s a danger of you drifting off to sleep. Afternoon and evening showtimes available. Click for tickets!
