Melted Heart Crayons :: A DIY Valentine’s Day Craft Idea for the Classroom

0

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Can you believe it?  Have you thought about the classroom treats your child will hand out this Valentine’s Day yet?

How much time do you have for DIY classroom treats?

That’s always my question!

I have always tried my best to help my kids prepare little treats for their classmates because friendships are a big deal, especially around Valentine’s! In the past, with my boys (who are now teenagers), I’d find myself scrambling the night before at the local grocery store for a box of cards and a package of lollipops for them to hand out at school. I didn’t purposely wait until the last minute, it’s just that Valentine’s Day always snuck up on me!  But over the past couple of years, I’ve gotten better about preparing for Valentines after I discovered Pinterest!

I know we’re just barely into the new year, but as a busy mom, working full-time from home and running the household for my party of 5, I don’t have a lot of free time to focus on being crafty with classroom treats for Valentine’s. I did come up with something my Kindergartner thought was “cool” and easy to do!  The best part?  I didn’t have to rush out to the store to buy anything this year!  Score!

I’m sure if you look around the house, you’ll find old, broken crayons lying around!  Why not make use of them by turning them into melted crayon hearts?  Here’s how to do just that!  All you need is a silicone heart tray and some crayons! And well, an oven of course!

Step 1: Preheat oven to 250 degrees.

Step 2: Remove paper from crayons.

Step 3: Cut crayons into small pieces.

Step 4: Fill up silicone heart tray with crayon pieces.

Step 5: Place tray in oven and leave in oven until crayons have melted.  For us, it took about 15 minutes.

Step 6: Once tray is removed from oven, let crayon hearts cool for 5 minutes and then place in freezer for another 5 minutes.

Final step: Push them out of the tray and they are ready to attach to a handmade card!

If you’re a teacher, you must have a ton of broken crayons in the classroom! I know I did! I made an extra batch just for my preschoolers!
