sum·mer: ‘səmər/, noun  : the season between spring and autumn, in the Northern Hemisphere from the summer solstice to the autumnal equinox, and in the Southern Hemisphere from the winter solstice to the vernal equinox.

That might be Dictionary.com’s definition, but for me summer can be defined as “my favorite time of year!” It’s nearly impossible to describe all the reasons that summer has become my favorite season, but despite the unbearable heat, for me it boils down to 3 simple things:

  1. Quality Family Time

  2. The No. 1 Excuse to Stay in a Pool for 3 Months

  3. A Chance to Build Friendships

water-fight-442257_640 (1)I absolutely love all of the one-on-one quality time with my family during the summer months, and with my first born starting Kindergarten this Fall, I know especially this summer will be filled with lots of lazy mornings snuggling in bed while watching cartoons, messy, messy art projects, and exploring new playplaces in our city. And this summer we’ll be adding something new to our agenda — entertaining and meeting some new friends and neighbors!

For the last 4 years we’ve gotten to know some amazing families at my son’s preschool across town, but now we’re moving on to our neighborhood elementary this Fall and it’s time to get to know the families and kids he’ll go through childhood with. (Cue pre-Kindergarten feelings…and let the crying begin!) So, this summer we’ll be hosting a few BBQ’s and inviting peers over to swim, and most importantly, opening our home to new friendships!

Blackmon Mooring Entertaining SampleIf you’re needing a little entertaining inspiration, The “Home is the Heart of Summer” Guide is available free for download at www.blackmonmooring.com/summer and covers everything from practical home care and safety tips to unique activities to create new traditions for the whole family. In addition, there is also a whole section dedicated to summer entertaining that offers easy decorating ideas, party pointers, recipes for savory and sweet dishes, as well as refreshing cocktails.

One of my favorite recipes is the Ocean Water Mocktail — that both adults and kids will love. The recipe includes a little lemon-lime soda, coconut extract, and a festive candy fish.

If you’re looking to get to know the parents only, I can suggest the Watermelon-Tequila Cooler — a little tequila, a little lime juice, and a hint of watermelon and blueberries to help you stay cool. It’ll be a hit!

In addition to summer sips, you’ll also find tasty dinner recipes on the grill, tips to take your treats and desserts to the next level, and a few creative crafts to keep the kids entertained while you host.

What can be more fun than spreading out a large (old) bed sheet and turning it into yard art with washable paint or use left over dinner cans and make homemade wind chimes

You’ll find all of this and more in the “Home is the Heart of Summer” Guide; available for FREE from Blackmon Mooring.

Blackmon Mooring Guide SampleWho is Blackmon Mooring? Started in 1948 as a furniture and dye shop, Blackmon Mooring has grown to become a leader in each service area it practices – from carpet cleaning and air duct cleaning to fire and water restoration. The earliest founders of Blackmon Mooring built their business on reliability, quality and superior customer service. In 1981, the company expanded its reach globally with the addition of the BMS CAT division and since then, it has responded to some of the world’s most devastating disasters. Today, the company follows the same principles it was founded upon, and always remembers that the customer is the cornerstone of the business.

Krystal Hurst
Krystal is a Dallas-native who began her career as a fourth grade teacher in Richardson RISD, but quickly changed paths to became a stay-at-home mom in 2011. Through a happy coincidence, she stumbled upon (what was then known as) Dallas Moms Blog in 2012 and found a community she’d been looking for since coming a mom. Shortly after joining the team, she gratefully accepted the “baton” passed to her as new owner of the site, and took off with it running full speed! Krystal not only helped to grow Dallas Moms into a large parenting resource, but also launched Collin County Moms in 2016; providing those in the north Dallas suburbs their community resource platform. While building a community, uniting the moms, and growing a business around this passion was a dream come true, after almost 10 years, Krystal officially stepped down as owner, and is now focusing on raising her 4 boys with her husband, Tim, and rediscovering old hobbies.
