Dallas Moms Blog received complimentary tickets to review James & The Giant Peach. All opinions are 100% our own!

We just got the opportunity to experience the Dallas Children’s Theater’s opening night production of James and the Giant Peach at the Rosewood Center for Family Arts. This show was a perfect family date night and was enjoyed by adults and children alike.

Meeting James, our favorite character

This whimsical adaptation by David Wood of Roald Dahl’s classic book about finding the hero within was a peachy feast for the eyes.  The production follows a young English boy, James Henry Trotter, on an adventure after a series of unfortunate events sends him to live with his two, terrible aunts.  Life with his aunts is difficult until he trips and spills some tiny, magic seeds on a tree.  The next morning, a huge peach is growing outside their home.  James encounters new friends-Grasshopper, Ladybug, Earthworm, Centipede and Spider-and off they go on a quest for happiness which ends in New York City.

Technology plays a big part in this production, with the gigantic peach itself rigged as an impressive 13-foot stage that revolves. HD projections, fog, and LED magic effects will all add to the ambiance.  The set and costumes are colorful and cleverly made to show the character’s individuality.

The show is recommended for ages 5 and up. The theater does offer a variety of programs for all ages, including productions for teens and for “squirmy toddlers and their families.” A sensory-friendly performance of James and the Giant Peach is scheduled for May 13.

One of my favorite aspects of this family-friendly theater is if you have a child that needs to step into the lobby briefly, they air the play on two television sets you can still see all the “marvelous things” this fun production has to offer.  The theater itself has comfortable and spacious seating and an option of snacks for purchase at intermission.

One of my kids’ favorite parts of the evening was meeting and speaking with the characters in the lobby after the show.  Plan to stick around, speak with the cast and get the fun printed show poster provided by the theater signed by them.  I found the cast to be so engaging and kind with my boys, which really made my kids more excited about the performing arts.

My 6 year old twins loved the show and were chattering excitedly about one of their favorite authors all the way home.   If you have not picked up tickets yet, do it soon.  James and the Giant Peach is playing at the Center from May 5-May 27, 2017.

We definitely plan on seeing some other shows this season with the Dallas Children’s Theater.  My 6 year old twins have requested to see The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show and How I Became a Pirate, which are part of the recently announced DCT 2017-2018 season.

Hobbies include binge watching superhero shows like Smallville, Gotham and The Flash (Hello?! A Forensic Scientist by day and a Superhero by night?! That’s my life!) and making cool, homemade costumes for her kids to play Star Wars or Transformers. Jennifer loves all things comic book related and adores horror and zombie films. She can’t decide if she loves coffee, margaritas or Daryl Dixon more. Although she loves being a boymom, Jennifer can’t wait until she can get nights out with her girlfriends to check out fun Plano area restaurants or get out to Target to shop by herself.
