I don’t know about you, but sometimes getting my almost 3 year old son to move is a beating. I can’t even imagine what his teenage years will look like! The ice days we recently had made me appreciate even more that our family intentionally finds ways to move and burn little boy energy.

Our family loves to walk. We have a myriad of strollers, bikes, scooters and little push cars that allow us to

get out and walk in our great neighborhood. But at the end of a long day, sometimes my 3 year old just doesn’t want to walk. Which is a problem, because he definitely still has energy to burn! Enter our favorite way to get moving and have fun: an adventure walk.

It’s honestly no different than a normal walk, but it’s all about the hype and preparation.

First, I start with the over hype. We talk about the adventure walk for an hour leading up to it. I ask him what adventures he thinks we will have. I ask him what he thinks we will see or hear or smell. Then, I let him pack his toolbox for the adventure. It’s always so funny to me what odd assortment of items he finds that he needs for the walk, but he loves packing his very own tool box! Finally, I show him our goals for the walk. It’s super easy, usually just free clip art I find online (zero artistic ability here!). And then, off we go!

We walk virtually the same sidewalks we walk every other day of the week, but for some reason this opens his eyes to see way more than he usually does. We usually even end up finding other interesting things to look at and talk about! As he finds items on our piece of paper, he marks them off.

When my husband gets home from work, he usually throws himself in his arms with sheer excitement over everything we saw on our adventure walk that day.

What adventure walks can you take in your neighborhood? It’s not hard at all! Just remember: hype, toolbox, goals. It’s that easy!
