Make A Difference Today! Dallas Moms’ Top Charities for #NTXGivingDay

3

As moms, we often spend many of our days just trying to “survive.” We take care of our homes, our children, and (sometimes) our spouses. There’s co-workers, employees, and projects that need our undivided attention. We want to be good stewards to our friends and religious organizations. At the end of the day, giving more of ourselves may seem impossible because, honestly, at times, there may not be much more you feel like you can give.

But I urge you to push past that feeling, because when you give to those outside of your immediate home, you’re making a difference not just in the lives of others but a long-lasting impact on your own children.

According to a 2013 study for the United Nations Foundation conducted by the Women’s Philanthropy Institute at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, children whose parents openly discussed “giving” and included their children in these conversations were 20% more likely to give to charities as they got older than children whose parents who did not discuss giving with their children.

While the holidays are usually a great time show your children ways you can care for others, it’s important to show these acts of kindness outside of the holidays too. That’s why I’m grateful for days like North Texas Giving Day that can pull me out of “survival mode” and remind me that it’s time to show my children how we take care of others.

What is North Texas Giving Day?

Communities Foundation of Texas’ North Texas Giving Day is an 18-hour online giving event designed to empower every person to give back to their community by supporting local nonprofits and causes, and they make it so easy to give with their user-friendly platform.

All you do is find your charity of choice and make a donation between $25 and $50,000 through the northtexasgivingday.org website. Many organizations will tell you the impact your donation amount, which can help you decide how much to give. And all donations will be matched (by a percentage, not dollar for dollar), making your gift go further!

With over 2,400 agencies to donate to, the giving possibilities are endless—and overwhelming! So, with the help of our DM contributors, we’ve come up with a list of mom-friendly, family-friendly organizations across the metroplex that need your help on #NTxGivingDay. You can sit down with your children and actually show how your money will make a difference in families’ lives today.

Mommies in Need

Founded by former Dallas Moms contributor Natalie Boyle, Mommies in Need is an important organization that employs nannies who come to the homes of parents who are going through a major health crisis. The family may be dealing with cancer, stroke, surgeries, pregnancy complications, or any other extremely difficult situation. With the help of donations, each family can receive as much as 40 hours a week of childcare for up to six months.

These beautiful twins were born full-term and healthy because Mommies in Need cared for their 3 siblings so that their mom could be on bed rest!

With a $25 donation on North Texas Giving Day to Mommies in Need, you can help cover childcare while a parent goes to a doctor’s appointment; a $100 donation can cover the cost of childcare while a parent receives 6 hours of chemo treatment. These donations allow moms to focus on recovery while having confidence that their kids are in good hands.

Community Partners of Dallas

Community Partners of Dallas works to ensure safety, restore dignity and inspire hope for the more than 20,000 abused and neglected children served by Dallas County Child Protective Services. This organization works right alongside Dallas County CPS by supporting the Dallas caseworkers, providing new clothing, hygiene items, and a toy or book to children brought in to Child Protective Services. And Community Partners of Dallas provides the only free group talk therapy for sexually abused children and their non-offending guardians in the state.

The Birthday Party Project

Children are meant to be celebrated and The Birthday Party Project provides celebration experiences to children in Dallas who are homeless. These birthday parties are more than just that—they are a welcome distraction, a boost in self-esteem, and a joy factory to the more than 7,000 birthdays celebrated so far and over 42,000 who have attended and enjoyed games, crafts, parties, cake and favors.

A $30 donation provides a gift for a child who may have never received a birthday present, and a $100 donation provides for all the decorations, and that reach is even farther with a North Texas Giving Day matched donation!

North Texas Food Bank

Each day, the North Texas Food Bank provides access to more than 190,000 meals for hungry children, seniors, and families across 13 counties in North Texas.

For only a $100 donation on #NTxGivingDay, you can help the NTFB provide up to 300 meals to children who are at risk for food insecurity or chronic hunger, sending them home from school every weekend with a backpack filled with five pounds of food, including milk, juice, fruit and trail mix.

These valuable community non-profits only top the long list of incredible organizations benefitting from North Texas Giving Day.

  1. My favorite local non-profit that’s participating in NTX Giving Day is NAMI Dallas. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Dallas is a grassroots organization that provides assistance to individuals and family members affected by mental health conditions. Their education and support groups are Free of charge and life changing. Sharing of up-to-date mental health research and coping strategies provides strength and a sense of hope for individuals, friends, co-workers and family members. With 1 in 4 Americans currently experiencing a mental health condition (anxiety, add, depression, ptsd, etc) it’s important to have the mental health advocacy, education and support that NAMI Dallas offers.

  2. Thank you for this list! I gave to The Birthday Party Project this week, but Mommies in Need is new to me. Thanks for sharing this organization!
