2016 is in the books. Whew! Onward and upward in 2017, yes? As soon as January hits, we are so ready to crawl out from the holiday haze and embrace that fresh clean new year. Ahhh. The first page in a new notebook. How will you begin? Here are some ideas for getting out there, exploring our city, and creating memories and shared experiences with the kiddos. Happy New Year!

It’s filled with cool events and awesome ideas on how to keep your tiny tots and school-aged sweeties intrigued.

All Month :: Penguin Days at the Dallas Zoo! Admission is just $7 through the end of February. This is the perfect chance to see how the animals act when it’s not too hot to function.

All Month :: Dinosaurs Live! at the Heard Natural Science Museum. These animatronic dinos are only around through February, so be sure to see them before >insert joke about extinction<.

All Month :: Clone Troopers have invaded the Star Wars MINILAND at Legoland Discovery Center! This display is coming to an end on February 6th, so make your way over before it’s gone.

January 1 :: Celebrate the first day of 2017 at Fair Park for Day 1 Dallas. Live music, food trucks, zip lines, sledding on real snow, fireworks and more. $15 for adults and $5 for kids. Ticket price includes all activities! 11am-7pm.

January 4, 11, 18, 25 :: Every Wednesday is pajama day at Going Bonkers; kids wearing their jammies will receive ½ off admission. Get out of the house and stay warm at the same time? Win/win.

January 5 :: Celebrate A. A. Milne’s birthday with stories and crafts about the silly old bear from the Hundred Acre Wood. Free as part of the Irving Art Center’s JumpstART Stories & Art Series. Ages 2 and up.

January 7 :: The NorthCourt in NorthPark Center hosts David Slick, professional juggler, unicyclist, magician, and escape artist at 2pm. This dude has Guinness World Records, y’all.

January 7, 14, 21 :: Special Family Days exhibit at The Dallas Center for Architecture – Building Toys and Toy Buildings. See lots of vintage, modern, and unusual building toys plus toy buildings, with an emphasis on doll houses. Refreshments and hands-on activities for kids from 10am-3pm on these dates, but the exhibit is open M-F this month. Free!

January 8 :: Second Sunday Funday: Art Safari at the Irving Arts Center. Create art with your children based on adventure, travel, and exploration, and check out rarely seen National Geographic Society images in the gallery. Free! 1-4pm

January 11, 12, 14 :: Dallas Museum of Art offers Arturo’s Art & Me: Blast Off! Interstellar-style story time and art for kids aged 3-5 plus a parent. $8 Public, $5 DMA Members, adults and younger siblings do not need a ticket. 11am-12:30pm.

January 14 :: If the weather plays nice, do something a little different at the Heard Museum’s Second Saturday Bird Walk. Learn bird spotting and ID techniques. A great reason to bust out the binoculars! 8am start time.

January 14 :: Family fun time at Discovery Days: Forensics at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. Learn to be a super sleuth with your kids and get a chance to examine spy technology throughout the Museum. Free with admission.

January 14,15 :: Honor the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Granville Arts Center in Garland. The celebration kicks off at 10am with the 28th annual MLK parade and a post-parade celebration in Main Auditorium, and continues on January 15 with youth praise dance, drill team, and step extravaganza at 4pm. Both events are free and open to the public.

January 15  :: Celebrate the Year of the Rooster at Mochitsuki New Year’s Celebration in Richardson. Japanese music, food, traditional New Year’s games. Taste some homemade mochi! 2-5pm at Fujitsu Network Communications. $10 adults, $5 Children (6-12), free under 5.

January 21, 22 :: Calling all engines (or those of us who just like miniature stuff)! The Dallas Area Train Show 2017 is at Plano Centre this weekend. $8 per ticket, 12 and under free.

January 20, 21, 22, 28, 29 :: Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook begins its run at the Dallas Children’s Theater. Recommended for ages 5+. Based on the book of the same name, this is a comedy with a great life lesson.

January 28 :: Head to the Texas Rangers Winter Caravan FanFest at the RoughRiders ballpark in Frisco for free fun! Meet Rangers players, get autographs, play catch on the field, and run the bases. Lots of $1 deal concessions so you can drink beer, I mean hot chocolate, on the cheap. 10:30am-1pm.

January 28, 29 :: I’ve always wanted to see this. Harlem Globetrotters at American Airlines Center! Three games over the weekend – 2pm or 7pm on Saturday and 2pm on Sunday.
