Natural Playscape Alert :: Texas Discovery Gardens

If you’ve only been to Fair Park during the State Fair or for a concert at Starplex, you might be under the impression that getting into Fair Park requires a lot of effort. But that’s because those crowd-heavy events make the area way more difficult to traverse than usual. On a regular weekday or weekend, I find that heading over to Texas Discovery Gardens is no big deal. And free parking in front of the gardens makes things even easier.

Besides their ongoing story times and special events, don’t forget that Texas Discovery Gardens has an outdoor Nature Playscape for the kiddos. And I’m glad they added it – we’re all happy for our kids to run around a botanical garden, but it’s nice to have interactive outdoor activities, too.

Let me give you an overview if you haven’t been. The playground is a simple, sun-dappled space with a Playscape of natural materials. You can sit at adjacent picnic tables while the kids entertain themselves in the sandbox, Log Jump, and Tree Deck.

Kids can get to the top of the Tree Deck by rope ladder, wood ladder, or rock climbing wall. Once at the top, they’ll have a bird’s-eye-view of the tree canopy and the gardens. I’m making it sound scary high; it’s clearly for children.

Tips for a successful summer visit to Texas Discovery Gardens:

  • There’s lots of indoor fun and learning here, but since there’s also 7.5 acres of gardens to explore, bug spray and sunscreen are a good idea. Oooh, or a parasol.
  • Time your visit to coincide with the daily special activities: a butterfly release in the Butterfly House every day at noon, Toddler Talks at 11am, or the 2pm arthropod Critter Encounter.
  • Bring a picnic! As I mentioned, there are picnic tables available, or you can spread out a blanket in the garden.
  • The Children’s Aquarium is just next door on the Fair Park grounds, so why not take things next level with a second location.
  • Want to see more pics before you go? That always helps me feel prepared. Search the #TexasDiscoveryGardens hashtag on Instagram to see what’s up.

Open daily from 10 am – 5 pm. Final admission is sold at 4:15 pm.

Admission:
$10 adults/$5 children (3-11)/$8 seniors
FREE for children 2 and under

Admission is free with annual membership ($65 per year for a family membership). I would always recommend a membership if you can swing it. Did you know this one is reciprocal with lots of other gardens in the US? Love those reciprocals!
