Why You Shouldn’t Fall for “Inferior Momming”

2

Version 2

Inferior Momming may not be an actual term in the Urban Dictionary, but I’m going to go ahead and coin the term and make it official. Inferior Momming is when you look around at other moms and feel inferior because of something you are or are not doing. Allow me to elaborate on the topic.

There are many different categories of Inferior Momming, and I will touch on a few I feel I have achieved award winning status.

The Put Together Mom:

No matter what time of day it is, the put together mom always has on a stylish outfit; sans food and/or bodily fluid stains. She is never seen without perfectly coiffed hair, and flawless makeup. The put together mom is enough to make you want to go back home and try again tomorrow. An example of this would be pulling up to your child’s preschool and seeing the put together mom float from her car to the school doors looking gorgeous as usual. Then there’s me.  I may or may not be wearing the shirt I slept in, my hair looks like small creatures are holding residence in it, and my teeth may or may not be brushed yet. What? I haven’t finished my coffee yet!

The Pinterest Mom:

The Pinterest Moms show up to all events and activities with the cutest creations you have ever laid eyes on. This category is fresh in my brain because we just had Valentine’s Day. Last week, I rolled into my daughter’s Valentine’s Day party, very excited for her to hand out the Valentine cards we put together the night before at 9pm well in advance of the party, them BAM! Pinterest Mom! She sets out her perfectly executed, handmade Valentine with the catchy personalized tag attached. Naturally this is the point you blame your child for insisting on whatever the inferior item is you’ve presented.

The Fit Mom:

The Fit Mom will make you feel especially inferior. This mom is always in active wear, but you know she’s wearing it because she actually worked out or has plans to later that day. Her arms are a chiseled work of art, and muffin top is something she’s only familiar with in the kitchen. Then there’s me. I wear active wear on a daily basis, but mainly because I don’t care to have my jeans dig into my flesh all day, and I enjoy breathing. Also, wearing an actual bra for 12 hours straight is enough to turn me into The Cursing Mom.

The Calm Disciplinarian Mom:

The Calm Disciplinarian Mom is kind of like a mythical creature. She is someone that stays calm no matter what the situation. She is the mom that no matter what kind of ludicrous behavior her children are engaged in she manages to keep her tone calm, and delivers the perfect consequence, complete with a life lesson. She would never lose her cool, start yelling, and banish her 4 year old to their room while she surfs Facebook to collect herself. No! Of course I’ve never done that.

There are many, many more Inferior Mom categories I could describe for you, and probably many more I fit into depending on the day. I’ve definitely mastered Inferior Momming in the categories outlined above, but each night when I put my kids to bed they know they are well cared for and well loved. I may feel inferior in many areas but my kids only see a role model, and someone they adore. Lucky for me there’s nothing inferior about that!

  1. Such a great reminder Jennifer! I laughed at each of these…especially those put together moms. My child has given me a new appreciation for “sans makeup” beauty 🙂
