Sites Every Dallas Mom Should Know

2

A few weeks ago, Jenny mentioned some of her favorite bloggers that she’s enjoyed following and reading throughout the years, but I’ve found blogs can do more than just help me avoid the laundry during nap time. (Anyone else think nap time is just too short?)

As a mom on the go, I often find myself using a lot of online resources to help me throughout the day, and more times than not it’s a local blog that I turn to. But Dallas as a whole has so many great activities and opportunities for moms, but the city is huge! A mom in Frisco might not be aware of the amazing storytime in Garland. Or a mom in Dallas might not hear about the brand new park in Wylie. That’s where I’m so thankful for some of my favorite local blogs and websites!

Here’s a few that I rely on and you may find helpful as you go throughout your day.

  • Playground Perspectives: This uniquely researched site is run by 3 Plano moms of multiples who made it a mission to find and review all the playgrounds in the North Dallas area. Using their 3 sets of twins as guinea pigs, these moms find and explore playgrounds that have been recently discovered, suggested, or built in the Allen, Frisco, Plano, Prosper, McKinney, and Richardson areas. Their site is organized by zip code, park features, and cities which makes it incredibly easy to find a park near you. They also update their Facebook page often to let you know what new parks they’ve added to their site. **UPDATE 4/22/2015: Playground Perspectives is no longer an active site.
  • Social Rugrats: This company began as one mom’s blog that shared social events and activities popping up around the metroplex. Social Rugrats now continues their blog, but has expanded as an online community where parents can find educational resources, meetup with other moms, and find indoor and outdoor activities for children of all ages. They’ve recently launched Social Rugrats Beta which can help you find events and organize playdates and playgroups in your area.
  • North Texas Kids: That’s right! Their website is just as helpful as their magazine. They post regularly about topics that include parenting, food, activities, events, and family fun! You can check back often for the latest articles or frequent the calendar for story times and other ongoing fun activities for kids.
  • Dallas Single Mom: Although I’m not a single mom myself, I find Heather Buen’s blog to be extremely helpful and informative. She covers topics that I enjoy reading such as movies and music, books, and travel, but also shares great deals for couponers and cheapskates like me! And if you’re a single mom, she provides great tips that help with divorce, co-parenting, and custody.
  • Around Town Kids: A Frisco based website and blog that’s a go-to for the busy parent. Find up-to-date information on businesses in the Frisco, Allen, McKinney, and Plano areas plus events, contests, and giveaways happening throughout the Dallas & Collin County areas.
  • Tiny Dallas: If you aren’t one of Tiny Dallas’s many followers yet, you will be soon! Co-Founded by 3 local moms with children of various ages, this blog covers it all for a Dallas mom like myself. You’ll find restaurant reviews you hot spots you can dine at with your family to great spots for date nights.  There’s fun DIY projects for your home and kiddos. But what I love most about this blog is that it’s designed for us not just as moms but as women. If you’re tired of looking up info for your kids, then take a break and read all about style inspirations for your wardrobe, home decor ideas, and more! Oh, and did I mention they’re about to help launch the latest in D Magazine family – D Moms coming this October!

Okay, so these are a few of my favs. . . but what am I missing??

Krystal Hurst
Krystal is a Dallas-native who began her career as a fourth grade teacher in Richardson RISD, but quickly changed paths to became a stay-at-home mom in 2011. Through a happy coincidence, she stumbled upon (what was then known as) Dallas Moms Blog in 2012 and found a community she’d been looking for since coming a mom. Shortly after joining the team, she gratefully accepted the “baton” passed to her as new owner of the site, and took off with it running full speed! Krystal not only helped to grow Dallas Moms into a large parenting resource, but also launched Collin County Moms in 2016; providing those in the north Dallas suburbs their community resource platform. While building a community, uniting the moms, and growing a business around this passion was a dream come true, after almost 10 years, Krystal officially stepped down as owner, and is now focusing on raising her 4 boys with her husband, Tim, and rediscovering old hobbies.

  1. Do you know what happened to “Playground Perspectives”? It was a great site. I LOVED it. And sadly it appears that both their site and their Facebook page have been shuttered. 🙁

    • This website was run by moms, and it looks like they decided to throw in the towel! So sad because it was a great resource!!
