spring break staycationAlthough spring break season is here, you might not be willing to “spring” for an expensive vacation. A spring break staycation is a great way to get out and explore locally. You can finally make time for things you might not get around to on most weekends. Just because you aren’t going far this spring break doesn’t mean you can’t still feel like you’re going on an out-of-town getaway.

Maybe you’re saving up for something else, or perhaps you’re still trying to recoup the expenses you incurred during the holidays. Whatever your reason is for not jumping on a plane doesn’t mean you and your family can’t enjoy a great escape this spring.

That’s what I learned when I loaded up the minivan with my daughters and their friends to explore spring break staycation ideas for older kids in downtown Dallas.

We went full-on vacation mode and explored our own beautiful city to unwind, indulge and recharge right in our own backyard. It was a great way to discover some awesome things for teens and tweens to do over the break in Big D.

These favorite spring break staycation ideas and events in downtown Dallas just might inspire you to make the most of your downtime this season.

Boho Market at Dallas Farmers Market 920 S Harwood Street: Teens will love exploring this open-air pavilion at the Farmers Market March 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It features small businesses alongside Dallas Farmers Market farmers and vendors. It’s an eclectic community of artisans and makers bringing local, handcrafted goods together at a family friendly community event.

Alamo Drafthouse Cedars 1005 S Lamar:  Take your kid to see a tween-friendly movie, like Black Panther, Wrinkle in Time or Pacific Rim: Uprising, at the Alamo Drafthouse downtown.  It’s a great place to enjoy lunch, dinner, movies and events all under one roof.  Their attention to detail in film presentation and programming has made them a second home to movie fans all over DFW.

Dallas Museum of Art 1717 North Harwood Street:  Enjoy the DMA’s Late Nights festivities on March 16.  This month’s theme is all about gaming.  Although the DMA has activities for all ages, older kids will particularly enjoy unleashing their competitive spirit by playing daring, new interactive games in the atrium.  They can even learn more about how games are created and why gaming can change the world by visiting with Austin-based game designer Chelsea Howe.

Dallas Heritage Village 1515 S. Harwood Street: Travel back in time with your tween or teen by visiting the Dallas Heritage Village. Different hands-on activities occur around the village as kids learn about how life was back in the nineteenth century. Teens will have a blast learning how to send a coded message through the telegraph among other activities.

Reunion Tower GeO-Deck 300 Reunion Blvd E: See the amazing views during Spring Break at Reunion Tower.  Say hello to spring at the GeO-Deck! Enjoy FREE activities, entertainment and more with your general admission ticket purchase. Keep the fun going with their high-definition zoom cameras, interactive touch screens, telescopes and photo ops at our indoor/outdoor observation deck. Just take a trip up the tower and put a new spin on spring!

Dallas Segway Tours – Treat yourself and your teen on a guided Segway tour throughout downtown.  Pick from options around Dealey Plaza or the Katy Trail . You can choose from modern and historical sightseeing or beautiful Texas landscapes.

There are so many options for you and your tween or teen to pick from that you’ll think a downtown Dallas spring break staycation is the one of the best getaways you’ve spent together without even leaving town.

I'm a North Dallas wife and mother of two slightly over-scheduled teen girls and a happily overweight golden retriever. Living between the pulse of the city and tranquility of the burbs makes it easy to take weekly jaunts throughout the community in search of an interesting story lead, or just a good cup of coffee. Although I grew up in Oklahoma City, I've called Texas home for nearly 20 years. I guess that means I have dual citizenship on both sides of the Red River. When I'm not carpooling, I spend most of my time assisting a variety of nonprofits, schools and civic organizations in marketing and public relations throughout North Texas. My family and I recently returned from an epic 4,000-mile road trip, which is like driving further than Dallas to Honolulu. The experienced inspired me to write about building intentional family moments through the wonders of travel around town and across the U.S. in my blog, Mommy's Minivan Monologues I'm delighted to join Dallas Moms Blog and I'm excited to have you join me as I continue to discover the DFW area and share more tales from the road.
