A Dallas tradition since 1941, Dallas Summer Musicals is off to a roaring start with the world-renowned production of The Lion King. Seen by audiences in more than 100 cities and on every continent but Antarctica, Dallasites can experience this phenomenal production that has captivated audiences worldwide through July 7.

From the opening number, the audience is transported to a magical world full of wise, whimsical creatures teaching profound truths. Elton John and Tim Rice classics you and your family will recognize from The Lion King movie – Circle of Life, I Just Can’t Wait to be King, and others – are augmented with additional equally powerful music and lyrics exclusive to the stage production.

The Lion King Director Julie Taymor’s genius is in her ability to fuse the costumes, scenery and dance in to a stunningly unique theatrical experience – part song and dance, part puppetry and mime. The cast astounds, not just with singing, dancing, and acting, but in whisking the audience away to the Serengeti through their masterful handling of puppets, masks, and larger-than-life costumes and props.

From life-size giraffes ambling across the stage to the noble cheetah, jumping herds of antelope, and on-stage drummers, The Lion King elicits audible gasps and squeals of delight from the multi-generational audience. Young Simba and Nala take center stage through the first half of the show, making this a great production for little ones! A rascally Zazu steals the show with his zany antics. Be warned: Scar oozes with jealousy and rage and some scenes may be frightening for children under six or so. The stage production handles Mufasa’s death more quickly and with more sensitivity than the movie.

Every aspect of The Lion King – the costumes, the music, the voices, the color – is so magnificently big that every seat in the house is a good one! The technical aspects of the production are as spot on as the performance. Children’s boosters that fit perfectly in the seats are available for rent in the theater lobby for $3 each – a major upgrade I’ve never seen at another theater.

The Lion King would make a great summer treat for your family – or a bigger group! Groups of 10 or more get 15% off tickets and groups of 35 or more get 20% off! Visit dallassummermusicals.org to purchase tickets, but act fast! The show is only in town through July 7, 2018!

The summer season also includes Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel to Phantom of the Opera (July 24- August 5), and School of Rock (August 15 – 26).
